Found Sound is a leading music retailer based in Melbourne. Over the past has established itself as one of the go-to destinations for musicians, offering a wide selection of instruments, recording equipment, and gear. We spoke with the founder of Found Sound about the company’s commitment to supporting musicians, the role of creativity in the business, and how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the music industry.
How do you support musicians in their creative endeavours?
Not only does Found Sound offer standard guitar and keyboard goodies, we also provide musicians with unconventional instruments that are rarely stocked anywhere else giving out customers the opportunity to create sounds that are unique and exciting!
How do you help musicians, particularly those who are just starting out, choose the right instruments and equipment for their needs?
Generally we start by finding out what sort of music the customer is into, any particular bands or artists that they like, and then we try to put together a setup similar to the gear used by that performer. It’s a lot of fun trying to recreate the sounds!
How has the pandemic impacted the music industry, and how have you adapted?
More people stuck at home has meant a lot of new players have picked up an instrument, and more experienced musicians have further developed their craft. We have put a lot of time & effort into streamlining our online process, and we have also implemented a shipping system which has enabled us to provide same day service in some cases.
Does playing a musical instrument help in other areas of your life? Do you play at all?
Playing music is a big part of everyone’s lives here at Found Sound, we all play in several bands. It’s very much a part of daily life for me. I’ve never stopped playing long enough to find out if it’s necessary or not!
How do you foster a sense of community among your customers and within the music industry as a whole?
The move to the larger space in East Brunswick has meant it’s now much easier to hold events and product releases. In time we hope to have more in store performances. We are all active in the Melbourne music scene, which feels very much like an extended family, so it kind of fosters itself!
