Owning and operating a community pub for 15 years is an incredible achievement. We spoke to owners Bridie and Clodagh from The Fox Hotel about their community, neighbourhood and the link between hospitality and the arts.
What is the best thing about owning and operating a pub?
Our vision was always to create an inclusive, comfortable space where people could experience good food, interesting booze and a welcoming environment. The best thing for us is seeing people enjoying the space we’ve worked hard to create.
How important is the community at The Fox Hotel?
Community is the lifeblood of a local pub. We’re so lucky to be part of an interesting community, who’ve supported us through thick and thin. One of the best parts of being part of the community for the last 15 years is welcoming people through all their life stages- we’ve had the same regulars for years, we’ve seen people come in for date night who bring their babies in to meet us years later. Community really does feel like family.
What makes Collingwood different from other places in Melbourne?
It’s a wonderful melting pot of of creativity, diversity, arts and still retains a bit of that old school Melbourne we all remember.
How did you choose 100 beers? Are people interested in trying new things rather than sticking to their favourite?
We encourage them to visit us a 100 times!
Why did you pick ArtsPay, and what would you say to other pubs or bars considering joining?
Melbourne thrives on its arts scene, and the arts were hit so hard during the pandemic. Arts and the hospo scene go hand in hand, so for us it was a no brainer to support this initiative. We'd say to other businesses- definitely do it! Doesn't involve doing anything you're not already doing, but has the potential to make a real impact for our arts community.
What are your favourite arts activities when you are not at the pub?
Live music and exhibitions are always a favourite.
